RODEO – Who looks like a combination of an angel, a cherub, a friendly puppy, a cuddly teddy bear and Shirley Temple? And besides that has the stage presence of the great Al Jolson and the charisma of Frank (old blue eyes) Sinatra? None other than Billie Joe Armstrong, a 5-year-old who will make it to the big time. That’s according to his agent, James J. Fiatarone, head of Fiat Music Co. in Pinole. The music store in the Pinole Valley Shopping Center is where curly-headed little Billie Joe is taking voice lessons from Fiatarone’s wife, Marie-Louise. Both are completely sold on the youngster’s singing slyle and bubbling personality. The Fiatarones yesterday packed up Billie Joe, his 11-year-old sister, Hollie, and a few other budding songsters from the music school and drove to a San Francisco recording studio. There they recorded “Look for Love” a romantic ballad the couple wrote back in 1962 and renewed the copyright on in 1974.

Billie Joe has fallen in love with “Look for Love, as may be seen from a T-shirt he barely can be persuaded to take off. Fiatarone said that Billie Joe is the youngest of Andy and Ollie Armstrong’s six children and followed three of his sisters in piano lessons at the Pinole shop. Fiatarone said: “His mother told me that when he was just a baby he’d stand up in front of the TV and grab the fireplace tongs like a mike and try to impersonate the singer”. “I began to study him and analyze him when he started taking piano about a year ago. The more we talked the more I felt he was like a teddy bear and a puppy who could sing like an angel,” he added. Mrs. Fiatarone, a vocal coach as well as piano teacher, agreed. “I’ve had singers as young as three years old, but none with the charisma and love he has. To me he’s like a Renaissance angel, like a cherub in a Michelangelo painting.”

Fiatarone noted that once a month he puts on a concert at the shop to give his young musicians an opportunity to perform before a live audience. “He loves to perform,” Fiatarone said. “He has a style of communicating with his hands and head like Al Jolson or Frank Sinatra”.

“You know, Shirley Temple came at a time of the Depression when our country needed her sweetness. These are almost the same kind of times and I think the world is ready for this kind of feeling,” he added.

Mrs. Armstrong, who works part-time as a waitress in a Point Richmond restaurant, acknowledges that she has no musical ability although most of her children do.

She attributes their talent to their father, who as a drummer was leader of the Manny Armstrong Trio that played the It Club in El Cerrito and numerous other Bay Area night spots for some 20 years. He has put his drums away now and is watching his children’s musical abilities develop.

Billie Joe, like most boys his age, is fond of football, baseball and swimming. He also said that he likes to watch (and sing along with) performers on TV and radio.

Mrs. Armstrong confessed that she “kind of hoped” he’d eventually make music his profession but insisted that the parents will not be forcing or pushing Billie Joe into something he might not want on his own.

Fiatarone has high hopes for Billie Joe’s first 45rpm, stereo record. He said that he wants to distribute the disc throughout this country as well as in several European outlets. “Hearing true love, real love, sung by a 5-year-old boy is almost too good to be true,” he said. “I hope this will be a good answer for America. It will show that everyone walking the streets of America is not selling dope. It will be a refreshing contrast that not only hoods walk the streets but angels too.”

Nientemeno che Billie Joe Armstrong, un bambino di 5 anni che ce la farà a diventare un grande. Di questo ne è convinto il suo agente, James J. Fiatarone, a capo della Fiat Music Co. a Pinole. Il negozio di musica nel centro commerciale di Pinole Valley è il luogo in cui il piccolo Billie Joe dai capelli ricci prende lezioni di canto dalla moglie di Fiatarone, Marie-Louise. Entrambi sono completamente colpiti dalle abilità canore e dalla personalità frizzante del giovane.

Ieri i Fiatarone hanno fatto le valigie con Billie Joe, sua sorella Hollie di 11 anni, e alcuni altri cantanti in erba della scuola di musica e hanno raggiunto uno studio di registrazione a San Francisco. Lì hanno registrato “Look for Love”, una ballata romantica, scritta dalla coppia nel 1962 e di cui hanno rinnovato il copyright nel 1974.

Billie Joe si è innamorato di “Look for Love”, come si può vedere da una maglietta che a stento si riesce a convincere a togliersi. Fiatarone ha detto che Billie Joe è il più giovane dei sei figli di Andy e Ollie Armstrong e ha seguito le tre sorelle alle lezioni di piano al negozio a Pinole. Fiatarone ha detto: “Sua madre mi ha detto che quando era solo un bambino si alzava di fronte alla TV e prendeva le pinze del camino come un microfono e provava a impersonare il cantante”. “Ho iniziato a studiarlo e ad analizzarlo quando ha iniziato a suonare il pianoforte circa un anno fa, più parlavamo e più sentivo che era come un orsacchiotto e un cucciolo che cantava come un angelo”, ha aggiunto. La signora Fiatarone, una vocal coach e insegnante di pianoforte, è d’accordo. “Ho avuto cantanti di appena tre anni, ma nessuno con il carisma e l’amore che ha lui, per me è come un angelo del Rinascimento, come un cherubino in un dipinto di Michelangelo.”

Fiatarone una volta al mese organizza un concerto al negozio per dare ai suoi giovani musicisti l’opportunità di esibirsi davanti a un pubblico dal vivo. “Adora recitare”, ha detto Fiatarone, “ha uno stile di comunicazione con le mani e la testa come Al Jolson o Frank Sinatra”.
“Sai, Shirley Temple è arrivata in un momento della Depressione quando il nostro Paese aveva bisogno della sua dolcezza. Questi sono più o meno gli stessi tempi e penso che il mondo sia pronto per questo tipo di sensazione “, ha aggiunto.

La signora Armstrong, che lavora part-time come cameriera in un ristorante di Point Richmond, riconosce di non avere capacità musicali nonostante la maggior parte dei suoi figli ne abbiano. Attribuisce il loro talento al padre, che come batterista era il leader del Manny Armstrong Trio che ha suonato all’It Club di El Cerrito e numerosi altri locali notturni della Bay Area per circa 20 anni. Adesso ha messo via la sua batteria e sta osservando lo sviluppo delle abilità musicali dei suoi figli.

Billie Joe, come la maggior parte dei bambini della sua età, è appassionato di calcio, baseball e nuoto. Ha anche detto che gli piace guardare (e cantare insieme) gli artisti in TV e radio.

La signora Armstrong ha confessato di aver “sperato” che alla fine avrebbe fatto della musica la sua professione, ma ha insistito sul fatto che i genitori non avrebbero forzato o spinto Billie Joe in qualcosa che non avrebbe voluto da solo.

Fiatarone nutre grandi speranze per il primo disco stereo 45 giri di Billie Joe. Ha detto che vuole distribuire il disco in tutto il paese così come in diversi punti vendita europei. “Ascoltare il vero amore, l’amore reale, cantato da un bambino di 5 anni è quasi troppo bello per essere vero”, ha detto. “Spero che questa sarà una buona risposta per l’America. Mostrerà che tutti quelli che camminano per le strade d’America non stanno vendendo droga. Sarà un contrasto rinfrescante che non solo i teppisti camminano per le strade, ma anche gli angeli”.
